The Skansen Christmas Market is one of the biggest in Sweden and dates back to 1903. Visitors can admire craft products in the Town Quarter, buy Christmas ornaments and sweets, and warm up with glögg wine, the traditional Swedish Christmas drink.
For many Stockholmers, Christmas begins with a visit to the event, and every Sunday the fair attracts around 25,000 visitors.

Christmas Fair in the Old Town

Christmas Fair in the Old Town of Stockholm
When:
20 Nov - 23 Dec 2010 (annual)
Where:
Stortorget
Cost:
Free
Opening Hours:
Daily 11am-6pm
1914, the main square in Stockholm's Gamla Stan has hosted a traditional Swedish Christmas fair. Stock up on presents and warm up with candy and glögg. Surrounded by snow and medieval architecture, you can't get more Christmassy than this.
The stunning surrounds of 800-year-old Gamla Stan make an appropriate setting for this festive event. As Stockholm's old town, its narrow laneways and cobbled streets add an authentic old-world atmosphere to Christmas festivities.

Avoiding much of the crass commercialism found during Christmas in other European capitals, Stockholm's Christmas Fair comprises a cluster of wooden stalls that sell traditional toys and local delicacies where both children and adults can while away happy hours exploring the curios and trinkets on offer. Pick up a handmade memento before making your way home by candlelight.

Stockholm Attack: Bomb Blasts Shake Swedish Capital (Video)

One dead in suspected suicide terrorist bombing

[ Police Say Sweden Blasts Were Terror Crimes -

STOCKHOLM—Two bomb blasts shook downtown Stockholm on Saturday afternoon, injuring two and killing one, in what has been described as a terrorist suicide bombing, the Swedish security police agency SÄPO has said.

Around 5 p.m. local time on December 11, SÄPO and Swedish news agency TT received violent threats in the form of emails and sound files. Ten minutes later, a white Audi exploded in the very heart of Stockholm's shopping district, where Christmas shopping was in full swing.

Only a few minutes later and a couple of blocks away, a man that SÄPO has since called a "terrorist" set off a bomb strapped to his own body, killing himself, but injuring no one else.

Two people received minor injuries in the first attack.

The bomber, Iraqi-born Taimour Abdulwahab al-Abdaly, said in his threats to TT and SÄPO that he was targeting Swedish civilians because of Sweden's participation in the war in Afghanistan as well as the country's non-response to the Muhammad cartoons drawn by a Swedish artist that caused widespread protests in the Muslim world.

SÄPO said after the bombings that their assessment of the threat level against Sweden remains unchanged, but the agency is currently reviewing the issue.

Magnus Ranstorp, terrorism expert at the Swedish National Defence College told TV channel TV4 that he finds it hard to believe that this was the work of a single individual, considering the difficulty of the operation.

“A car bomb was set off and a man was strapped with pipe bombs in a separate operation. Several threatening messages were delivered to the Swedish public. I do not believe the planning and execution of all this is the act of a single individual," he told the news channel.

Six connected pipe bombs were found on al-Abdaly, but only one was actually set off.
"If it had gone off on Drottninggatan [the main shopping street in Stockholm] it would have been a massacre," a source told Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet.

Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt commented on the incident on Twitter, calling it “a very worrying attempt at a terrorist attack in a heavily populated part of downtown Stockholm."

"Failed," Bildt tweeted, referring to the attack, "but the consequences could have been catastrophic.”

At a press conference on Sunday, Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt stressed the importance of taking a stand for democracy and giving the justice system time to conduct a thorough investigation before jumping to conclusions.

“Let us not act based on speculation,” he said.

If the bombings were indeed a terrorist act, the attack would be the first of its kind in Sweden.

History of Santa.....

History of Santa Claus

The European Christian saint, kind Bishop Nicholas became Santa Claus in America over many decades. The first Europeans who arrived in the New World brought St. Nicholas and his stories with them. In the sixteenth century, reformers and counter-reformers took every step possible to curb the Saint Nicholas-related customs, but they could not succeed. The common people in Europe loved the saint so much that not only did his customs survive in the European subcontinent, but they were later carried overseas as well.

After the American Revolution, John Pintard, founder of the New York Historical Society, promoted St. Nicholas as patron saint of both society and city. In the early nineteenth century, an early American writer named Washington Irving joined the Society. He published the satirical fiction, Knickerbocker's History of New York that year on St. Nicholas day. St. Nicholas was portrayed as a humorous and jolly character in this work of fiction. Among other things, it was first remarked here that St. Nicholas comes down chimneys to bring gifts to children. On December 06, 1810, the New York Historical Society held its first St. Nicholas Anniversary dinner, and artist Alexander Anderson drew the first image of St. Nicholas for the Americans. In the drawing St. Nicholas was shown as a gift giver, filling children’s hanging stockings with treats.
The image transformation of St. Nicholas into a jolly elf character was further aided by a poem written in 1823, "A Visit from St. Nicholas," which is now popular as “The Night Before Christmas.” The poem is believed to be a work of Clement Clark, but some other sources suggest that it was written by Henry Livingston in the year 1807 or 1808. Regardless of who wrote the poem, it had an immense role to play in creating “Santa Claus.”

In 1863, a cartoonist named Thomas Nast started a series of sketches in Harper’s Weekly, which established Santa as a rotund, jolly character who had a long white beard and wore red fur clothes. Nast’s drawings appeared in the paper till 1886 and played a considerable role in forming the American Santa Claus. Not just the appearance of St. Nicholas, but his name also changed (to Santa Claus) from the German Sankt Niklaus and the Dutch Sinterklaas.
Santa was portrayed in a variety of ways by several artists, but by the end of the 1920s, consistent works by popular illustrators boosted Santa’s image as it is seen today. The final “stamp” on the image were the Coca Cola Santa advertisements started by Haddon Sundblom in 1931.
They widely popularized Santa and established his image as part of our commercial culture. By the end of the 1950s Santa could be seen everywhere, endorsing a wide variety of products. The enormous commercial success of Santa spilled him over and across seven seas, making him a familiar friendly face in all continents. It has been an amazing transformation from the fourth century Saint Nicholas to the present day jolly Santa Claus.

EVANGELIST ORAL ROBERTS DEAD AT 91

Evangelist Oral Roberts, founder of the Oral Roberts Evangelistic Association and Oral Roberts University, died Tuesday from complications of pneumonia in Newport Beach, California, his spokeswoman said. He was 91.

Roberts' son, Richard, and daughter Roberta were at his side, spokeswoman Melany Ethridge said in a statement.

Roberts was hospitalized Monday following a fall on Saturday, in which he suffered broken bones, Ethridge said earlier, adding he was being treated for pneumonia.

There will be a private interment, the statement said. Arrangements for a public memorial service in Tulsa, Oklahoma, are pending.

"Oral Roberts was a man of God, and a great friend in ministry," the Rev. Billy Graham said in a statement Tuesday. "I loved him as a brother. We had many quiet conversations over the years."

Granville Oral Roberts was born into poverty in Bebee, Oklahoma, on January 24, 1918, according to a brief biography released by Ethridge. His Christian ministry began with what he described as his own miracle healing of tuberculosis at age 17.

Roberts pastored churches in Oklahoma and Georgia and preached at revivals around the country while studying at Oklahoma Baptist University and Phillips University in Oklahoma, according to the biography.

In 1947, he founded the Oral Roberts Evangelistic Association in Tulsa, "and began conducting crusades across America and around the world, attracting crowds of thousands -- many who were sick and dying and in search of healing," the biography said. "Through the years, he conducted more than 300 crusades on six continents" and "laid hands" on an estimated 2 million people, according to association officials.

In 1954, he brought television cameras into services, providing what he liked to call a "front-row seat to miracles" to viewers, the biography said. He later began a television program, initially called "Oral Roberts Presents." The ministry's daily program, now called "The Place for Miracles," can be seen on more than 100 television stations, multiple cable and satellite networks and the Internet, Ethridge said.

"If God had not in his sovereign will raised up the ministry of Oral Roberts, the entire charismatic movement might not have occurred," said Jack Hayford, president of the California-based International Church of the Foursquare Gospel, in the statement. "Oral shook the landscape with the inescapable reality and practicality of Jesus' whole ministry. His teaching and concepts were foundational to the renewal that swept through the whole church."

Roberts founded the Abundant Life Prayer Group in 1958 "to address the around-the-clock needs of those suffering and requesting prayer," according to the biography. Today, prayer partners at Abundant Life continue to receive calls 24 hours a day. The group has received more than 23 million phone calls for prayer, the biography said.

Oral Roberts University was founded in 1963, built on 500 acres in Tulsa and dedicated four years later by Graham, according to the biography. Graduate schools including medicine, nursing, dentistry, law, education and theology were later added. Roberts served as school president until 1993 but remained a chancellor until his death.

He remained involved in his evangelistic association as much as his health allowed, Ethridge said Monday. His son, Richard Roberts, currently serves as president.

In 1977, Roberts said he had a vision of a 900-foot-tall Jesus, who told him to found the City of Faith Medical and Research Center. The biography said the center was aimed at "merging the healing power of medicine and prayer."

In 1986, Roberts announced that God would "call him home" unless he raised $8 million to send medical missionaries from the center -- an announcement that was widely publicized. He wound up raising $9.1 million, but the center closed in 1989. However, the biography said, it left "a lasting impact on the understanding by many medical professionals of the importance of treating the whole person -- body, mind and spirit."

In addition, Roberts wrote more than 130 books, the biography said. "His book 'The Miracle of Seed Faith' has more than 8 million copies in circulation. This book's key principles -- God is your source, sow your seed out of your need, and expect a miracle harvest -- formed a fundamental part of Roberts' ministry and legacy," the biography said.

Before his death, Roberts said, "After I'm gone, others will have to judge how well I've obeyed God's command not to be an echo but to be a voice like Jesus," the statement said. "As far as my own conviction is concerned, I've tried to be that voice with every fiber of my being, regardless of the cost."

Responding to news of Roberts' death, Graham said Tuesday: "Just three weeks ago, I was privileged to talk to Oral on the telephone. During the short conversation, he said to me that he was near the end of his life's journey. I look forward to the day that I will see Oral and Evelyn Roberts again in heaven -- our eternal home."

Roberts wife, Evelyn, died in 2005 after the couple had been married more than 66 years. Roberts is survived by his son and daughter and their spouses, along with 12 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren, Ethridge said.
