Zanzibar is a part of the Eastern African Republic of Tanzania. It consists of the islands of Zanzibar in the Indian Ocean 25-50 km from the coast of the mainland. There are many small and two large islands: Unguja (the main island, unofficially known as "Zanzibar) and Pemba. Zanzibar was once a separate state with a long history of trade in the Arab world, but united with Tanganyika to form Tanzania, and still has a high degree of autonomy within the Union. The capital is on the Zanzibar island of Unguja, the town of Zanzibar City, and the old town, known as the Stone Town, is a World Heritage Site.
